I have an easy alternative to compare our results.ĭownload the linux source, possibly to a ram disk: In the long run, the CPU of a notebook like our own tend to overheat and turbo boost gets disabled to reduce heating. By using all CPU cores you minimize the impact of turbo boost (which gains max turbo when a single core is used). To me it has a few problems to really measure the impact of the turbo boost issue. Do you remember reloading the bios defaults each time you flash a new/old looked at the phoronix suite and at the c-ray bench you used. This way you disable the intel card, consume some more power, but solve any problem with X (and get the best performance).

WHAT IS TURBO BOOST LINUS INSTALL
My suggestion is to disable optimus in the bios and to install the nvidia proprietary drivers. I imagine Ubuntu 11.10 should also run well (being based on debian sid).
WHAT IS TURBO BOOST LINUS DRIVERS
Which Microsoft OS were you running? How you configured the BIOS? Which OS drivers do you installed and which you don't? Have you done some single core tests apart "performancetest 7.0"? Indeed, the turbo boost issue would probably affect single core tests only.Īs for Linux, I run it as my unique OS. If this is the case I am very curious to know the details since you are the very first one I know which was able to get good performance out of A07.
WHAT IS TURBO BOOST LINUS MAC OS X
On a side note i have also tested Mac os x lion on Dell E6420 using unibeast you can read my result the performace is brilliant for video conversion and dvd burning i have managed to convert a 700mb avi to dvd in 10 minutes using lion but with ubuntu it takes about 20 minutes using dvd styler if i remember correctlyĪnyway i await your I understood correctly, looking at your last results it seems that you were able to get the best performance with A07. So in the long and short yes i can test on the ubuntu platform for you as i am very keen on getting this extra 30% of power back if you tell me which version of linux you are using i will download and test also to give a more accurate result but i will have to try and find a program designed for testing this type of performance. I am very interested to know what other people are using as i use ubuntu a lot for web design mainly php and html, and editing programming languages like python as on the dell site it does have a download for the 32bit of 10.10 LTS which is useless to me as i have 8gb ram. I do have ubuntu 11.10 64bit on a exturnal esata hard drive which is stable now as i was testing the 11.10 64bit beta release which really hated the e6420 causing kernel panics and display glitches. (This computer) was when i turned everything back on apart from speed step and upgraded to a07, as you can see from the results compaired to the other results there is only a slight increase in power (windows 圆4 does work you just have to disable all c-state and turbo boot and all vt's which is probually why it isnt on the dell support download site you can use the drive pack for normal windows xp apart from it misses a few things like the Nvidia nsv 4200m which if you search for nVidia_multi-device_a02_R310807 this works anyway back to subject) The first screen shot shows different config's the first result on the list is just the cpu tested with only hyper threading enabled i also disabled all virtualisation enhancements turned off.
WHAT IS TURBO BOOST LINUS WINDOWS 7
On the first post with the screenshot this was done from windows 7 ultimate 64bit with bios version a05 with turbo enabled hyper threading enabled and c-state enabled and speedstep disabled but the 2 results above were actually my computer when i got it brand new with bios version a04, so very strange my understanding from talking to dell tech support was that even if you re-flash with a lower version the firmware will remain the same on the components so causing a more underlying issue. I should i have explained myself a bit better
